August 2009 Archives

We’ve been glad to get more attention from local friends who are writing about us on their blogs. First, we’d like to lend our moral support to “Colin the Great,” a contributor to the Mason Goes Green blog. Colin is trying to eat locally and has chosen our market at George Mason University as a primary source of his food:

Starting tomorrow, August 19, 2009, I will attempt to only eat food that comes from the George Mason University Farmers’ Market or food that I have grown myself. The purpose of this experiment is two-fold; first of all, I want to find out first-hand how difficult it is to subsist on a local diet. Secondly, I’d like to support the farmers’ market, and by extension, its farmers, by drawing attention to it. The only exception to getting food either from the market or from my yard will be salt.

Good luck, Colin! You can read more about his experiment here and follow his progress on the Mason Goes Green blog. We’ll check in every now and then too. How about joining Colin and using our markets to help you in your campaign?

We were also flattered by the wonderful blog post by Jama Rattigan, a local author of children’s books. Jama visited our Fairfax Corner market recently and documented the trip with lots of kind words and great photos. Check it out:

I like supporting small farmers. I like knowing where my food comes from. I like not having to dodge stressed-out people racing their shopping carts up and down grocery store aisles like there’s no tomorrow. And it’s the best place for people watching. You know the old adage, “you are what you eat.” Well, I love spying on taking note of what other people are buying. Gruff expressions melt away at the sight of an overflowing peach bin. Go ahead, snap a green bean in half and taste it. Marvel at the long, curly cucumbers. Inhale the sun-ripened scent of a freshly-picked tomato, and renew your commitment to a healthier diet.

Here’s the full post. Even the comments are a love-fest! So even if you don’t have a blog, let us know what you think of our markets when you come by — either in person or by e-mail. As Jama said, it’s the personal touch that makes a difference.
